Paradise in Provence discover Mt St Victoire, Picasso & Cézanne - art & wine

Tour summary

This is an exceptional day's visit that takes you around both the north and the south face of the iconic Montagne Sainte Victoire. To the north discover hidden lakes - Lac de Bimont, rich forests and tiny Provençal villages including Vauvenargues, Picasso's burial place at the beautiful Château of Vauvenargues. From here we drive to the tiny medieval village of Puyloubier, a village set against the backdrop of the south side of the mountain and a gastronomic treat with a lunch stop on the terrace of the tiny village square. In the afternoon a drive through the national park with a stop and a visit to Domaine St Ser, one of the highest vineyards set against the backdrop of the mountain. Sample the delicious wine before we drive through the park back towards Aix-en-Provence. On the drive back across the south side of the mountain you will see and feel what inspired Cézanne to paint including the small windmill that he frequented as a studio space. A full day out that combines all the elements of the perfect French Art de Vivre.

Tour itinerary

This tour takes an unusual tour around Mont St Victoire on the north side starting with a short visit to Lac de Bimont, an artificial lake created in the mountains close to Aix-en-Provence. From here a short drive to the little Provençal village of Vauvenargues, Picasso's buries place. Unfortunately we are unable to visit as the Château is privately owned. There are numerous small cafés in the village for refreshments, before we drive through the forest on the north face of the mountain to the wine making village of Puyloubier. Stop for lunch at your leisure with chance to visit the village and a local coopropriete wine maker that preserves the traditions of the smaller vineyards in the region. Next is a visit to Domaine St Ser, a small family run winery literally set against the backdrop of the mountain meanwhile all around you are traces of the inspired works of Paul Cézanne who lived in Aix and visited the area to paint over 400 paintings. You'll experience both aspects of Mont St Victoire and realise how the sun, the wind and the occasional rains impact life here.
