Tour summary

Avignon once centre of the Catholic world, today a magnificent urban landscape, overlooking the river Rhône & the Saint Bénezet Bridge - the famous Pont d’Avignon. Start with a visit to the Palais and a walk to the famous bridge of Avignon. Afterwards a short drive to the other side of the River Rhône to visit the medieval village of Villeneuve Les Avignon and La Chartreuse de Villeneuve Les Avignon that dates from the first half of the 14th century. Commissioned by Pope Innocent VI it is a magnificent building that connects with and helps to tell the story of the Pope's of Avignon. On our way, a short stop to marvel at the Tour Philippe-le-Bel, a tower that was once at the point of entry of the famous bridge of Avignon, almost a kilometre away in the city of Avignon.

The tour begins with a guided tour of the Palais des Papes with an audio guide/touch screen. This takes approximately two hours including a visit to the highest point of the Palais that offers exceptional views across the city and beyond. Afterwards a short walk down to the river and a walk on the famous Pont d'Avignon. From here we take the car to drive opposite to the village of Villeneuve Lès Avignon, en route passing by the Philippe Le Bel tower, once the entrance gateway to the Pont Saint Bénézet almost 900 meters away. A leisurely walk through Villeneuve lès Avignon to visit La Chartreuse, a monastery created by Pope Innocent VI and return via Fort Saint Andre for a short end of the day visit.

Tour duration

The total duration of the tour is 8 hours, assuming pick-up in Aix-en-Provence, Marseille or Avignon. The order for the tour is flexible enough to take into account the starting point changing depending on your location.  There is a scheduled break for lunch, price not included.

Pick-up & drop-off at either the Cruise Terminal in Marseille or your hotel in Aix-en-Provence, Marseille or Avignon. If your staying elsewhere we can coordinate a pick-up from your address.  (There may be a suppliment payable) 

Travel to all of the sites and destinations proposed with dedicated guide/driver & return to your hotel, address or the cruise terminal. Admission to the historic sites listed is included. Refreshments, snacks & lunch is an additional cost.
