Tour summary

Discover the remarkable connection between the Popes of Avignon and one of France's most prestigious wine appellations on an exclusive private journey through history, architecture, and exceptional wines. Your day begins in the magnificent city of Avignon, which served as the seat of the Catholic Church throughout much of the 14th century. Today, its impressive skyline remains one of the most recognisable in France, with the iconic Pont Saint-Bénézet (Pont d'Avignon), medieval ramparts, Petit Palais, Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms, and the imposing Palais des Papes, the largest Gothic palace in Europe.

Enjoy a guided visit of the Palais des Papes, where you'll discover the fascinating story of the papacy in Avignon and the profound influence the Popes had on the history, culture, and wine traditions of the surrounding region.

Leaving the city behind, travel north into the celebrated vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where history and winemaking have been intertwined for more than seven centuries. Rising above a sea of vines, the historic village is crowned by the evocative ruins of the papal château, built in the 14th century as a summer retreat for the Popes seeking refuge from the heat of Avignon. It was here that the foundations of one of the world's most respected wine regions were laid.

In the afternoon, visit two outstanding family-owned wine estates that exemplify the excellence of the appellation. Your first stop is Château La Gardine, owned by the Brunel family since 1947 and renowned for producing elegant, age-worthy wines that beautifully express the unique terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Continue to Château Fortia, a historic estate whose origins stretch back centuries. The château played a pivotal role in establishing the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in 1936, helping to define the standards that continue to protect the region's exceptional wines today.

At each estate, enjoy a guided cellar tour and expertly hosted tasting of award-winning wines, including the appellation's celebrated reds and its elegant, lesser-known white wines. Learn how centuries of tradition, combined with modern innovation and meticulous craftsmanship, continue to shape the identity of these remarkable vineyards.

Blending medieval history, magnificent architecture, spectacular vineyard landscapes, and exceptional wines, this carefully curated private experience offers a fascinating insight into the enduring legacy that links Avignon and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
